Researchers learned that 45% of smokers who had kicked the habit after a 12-week program had experienced relapse or smoked during the early weeks of cessation treatment. The delayed quitters also comprised one-third of the smokers who had successfully abstained from smoking one year later. The findings "support continuing cessation treatments without interruption for smokers motivated to remain in the quitting process despite lack of success early in the treatment," the researchers said.
