Australian researchers found that the malaria parasite employs a pathway that forgoes the use of glycophorin proteins to enter red blood cells in humans. The discovery, which involves the binding of the PfRh4 parasite molecule with the complement receptor 1 protein in red blood cells, could be used to develop new vaccines against the deadly disease.
