Many IT projects run over budget because chief financial officers and chief information officers fail to communicate, says Kenneth Brill, executive director of Uptime Institute. One reason is that CIOs often overlook the full cost of technology initiatives. For example, one IT department underestimated the cost of new servers by $86 million by omitting important building upgrades in their budget. Other problems include limited understanding of technology by CFOs, and IT staff turnover.
