More than $1 billion in federal funds used to put the jobless back to work by paying their salaries is scheduled to run out within weeks. Supporters say that if Congress doesn't renew the program, part of the $787 billion stimulus act, tens of thousands of people will lose their jobs. Critics oppose spending any more federal money. "It's very scary, because there's just no work," says one worker with a subsidized job.
