Cargill Meat Solutions' recall of 8,500 pounds of ground beef on Saturday after at least three people became ill from a rare E. coli strain is further fueling the fight to tighten food-safety rules. Current laws only make it illegal to sell meat containing the most common E. coli strain, but not the rare E. coli O26 bacteria and five other uncommon strains. Until Saturday, no outbreaks of the rare strains had ever been definitively tied to ground beef.
