The trained Labrador retrievers are an essential part of the team tasked with uncovering insurgents making makeshift explosives, but the dogs are overworked. Many are on their fifth or sixth deployment and the canines often arrive home skinny and exhausted after tours that can last six months or more, says the Pentagon's program director.
