Smartphones and text messaging are improving the lives of individuals who cannot hear or have hearing impairments. Sign language and interpreters are still important for face-to-face communications, but text messaging is replacing telephone-relay services and other forms of communication for many. "I don't have to depend on hearing people. It makes me a lot more independent," an administrator at the Alabama School for the Deaf said.
