The number of cats living underneath the famed boardwalk in Atlantic City has dropped in half since a group of volunteers began a concerted effort 10 years ago to humanely decrease the stray cat population with programs to neuter and vaccine the wild felines. The volunteers are part of the local chapter of Alley Cat Allies, which has also spent time educating people about the problems they create when they leave pets behind at the end of a vacation.
