The overwhelming majority of America's oil and natural gas pipelines were installed before 1979, according to a review of records held by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. Less than 30% of pipelines were built in 1979 or later, and just 9% of gas lines were installed later than 2000. "Aging infrastructure is the latest concern about the country's millions of miles of pipelines," writes Andrew Restuccia.
