The U.S. Geological Survey has sharply decreased its estimate of the amount of oil contained in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. From a 2002 mean estimate of 10.6 billion barrels of oil, the agency now projects that the area holds only 896 million barrels. The new data were based on aspects including the drilling of over 30 wells and seismic surveys, USGS added.
