Planting trees straight into the ground has been a widespread practice ever since nurseries started selling trees in containers with their flares covered, but this technique could cause the plant to die because the depth cuts off oxygen from its roots, writes Alma Gaul. Horticulturists say the right way of planting a tree is to use the flare near the base of its trunk when you measure planting depth.
