The Welder Wildlife Refuge in Taft, Texas, created its demonstration garden to educate people about the advantages of using endemic species of grass for gardening and landscaping. The site showcases 30 raised planting beds with different kinds of native Texan grass. Indigenous plants are more practical to use because they require less water, prevent erosion and provide a haven for wild animals and birds, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
