The European Commission has proposed to prohibit over the next five years the cloning of animals intended for consumption. European Union members are expected to clear the proposal, which an EU commissioner says is "a realistic and feasible solution" to animal welfare concerns. David Edwards, BIO's director of animal biotechnology, said the recommendation "turns a blind eye to global scientific agreement that foods from livestock clones and their offspring are completely safe to eat."
