About 12 million animals were used for scientific research in Europe in 2008, according to European Commission, about the same number as in 2005. Biological studies and veterinary- and human-medicine research accounted for much of the use. However, a safety expert at Roche, notes, "The use of human tissue, stem cells and in silico knowledge have greatly and positively impacted our field, in regards reduced use of animals in safety assessment."
