Medicaid paid $22,772 to treat a child with an autism spectrum disorder in 2003, more than it paid for other mental disorders, researchers said. Total expenditures for autism spectrum disorders per 10,000 children jumped 32.8% from 2000 to 2003, which researchers said was largely due to an increase in the number of cases rather than an increase in spending per patient.
