As a result of the Oak Knoll fire in Ashland, Ore., Ashland Fire & Rescue Chief John Karns wants to mandate that all new homes have fire-resistant roofs. He says existing flammable roofs should be phased out within 10 years. The proposal will likely be heard by the City Council in the next couple of months. Replacing a roof with fire-resistant materials could cost anywhere from $6,000 to $20,000, depending on the size, style and material.
