Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing are shaping the U.S. oil industry now that companies employ these techniques to tap shale-oil formations across the country, said Bentek Energy. According to the report, such methods led to a 79% production boost in the Bakken Shale in 2009, making North Dakota the fourth-largest oil-generating state. Developments in onshore unconventional crude output may also help offset a short-term drop in deepwater production, the study added.
