Lisa Pierce says that when she used Groupon to promote her handcraft store, 500 customers signed up by 10 a.m. the first day. The numbers "kind of blew my mind," said Pierce, who sees the coupon promotion as a loss leader that may or may not pay off in the long run. Anita Wadhwani looks at a handful of businesses in the Nashville, Tenn., area that have tried Groupon, with varying degrees of success.
