Jean-Claude Trichet, president of the European Central Bank, helped buoy banks during the financial crisis by offering cheap cash, but he is having a difficult time taking away the support as borrowing costs for many nations soar. The situation is pulling the ECB further into helping the most indebted members of the euro bloc. The central bank's task is being complicated by the fact that interbank-lending rates have increased.
