More than 392,000 illegal immigrants were deported from the U.S. in the past year, said Janet Napolitano, secretary of Homeland Security. In addition to the deportations, Immigration and Customs Enforcement was able to levy more than $50 million in fines from 180 out of 2,200 audited employers found guilty of hiring unauthorized immigrant workers. The record surge in deportations reflects bolstered efforts of the federal government to address the issue of illegal immigration.
