With more than a dozen pet food recalls linked to salmonella contamination issued by the Food and Drug Administration since 2006, some veterinarians are urging families to keep pet foods away from children to prevent them from contracting the bacteria. Although the risk of humans getting ill from pet food is rare, it can be serious and could cause fever, diarrhea, stomach pain or even death. Vets suggest keeping pet foods out of the kitchen.
