In September, U.S. airlines narrowly missed reporting their first year-over-year increase in hiring since June 2008, according to figures from the Transportation Department. Airlines employed a total of 564,221 full- and part-time workers in September, compared to 564,546 a year earlier. Recently, employment indicators have turned positive for the industry, including an announcement by US Airways that it will recall 500 workers early next year.
