Discussions between Amtrak and NJ Transit about a tunnel project have stopped. A spokeswoman for Amtrak confirmed that there were exploratory talks between the two organizations about a shared rail tunnel but declined to say why they decided not to move forward. Earlier this year, Amtrak announced a proposal to build tunnels under the Hudson River for its Northeast Corridor, and Amtrak and NJ Transit share the 100-year-old tunnels that connect New Jersey to Penn Station in Manhattan.
