As host of the 2016 Olympics, Brazil will see a significant uptick in green construction in coming years, says Marcos Casado, a manager at Green Building Council Brasil. Nearly all new public buildings in Rio de Janeiro, the host city, are being designed to meet green-building standards, and the Olympic village itself will feature solar panels, natural lighting and "intelligent" elevators designed to make as few trips as possible. "The Olympics have had a clear impact on the interest in green construction," Casado says.
