Gardeners can determine which plants are suitable for xeriscaping by using the plants' leaves as a guide, according to JoAnne Skelly, an extension educator. Plants with smaller, gray and hairy leaves need less frequent watering because these characteristics help reduce water loss from the plant. Other factors, such as soil, moisture and light should also be taken into consideration to ensure that plants can survive in the landscape design, Skelly notes.
