Succulents such as cacti and agaves make wonderful addition to the landscape because they supply color all year and add height to the design, according to Cathy Babcock, assistant director of horticulture at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. These plants need irrigation regularly and thrive well in soil with good drainage, Babcock adds.
