The White House's plan of reaching a compromise with Republicans that would permanently extend the Bush tax cuts for the middle class, but only temporarily for the rich, appears to be a nonstarter with GOP leadership. Meanwhile, Democratic and Republican lawmakers who control tax-writing committees told the Internal Revenue Service commissioner Tuesday that Congress will work to prevent more than 20 million taxpayers from being hit with the alternative minimum tax.
