Landscape architect Mark Tessier was able to assemble a garden atop a 15,000-square-foot concrete roof at a condo complex in Marina del Rey, Calif. The designer used water gum trees in black-and-white striped containers to fill the space with greenery, and incorporated a giant timber bamboo into the setting so that residents living at the building's upper floors can get a glimpse of the plant's canes and foliage. Tessier also included ginkgo trees to evoke a feeling of autumn, because the plant sheds golden leaves during fall.
