Schools are embracing green-building and energy-efficiency standards, using development grants to install everything from geothermal heat exchangers to reflective roofs. While the high-tech systems can be expensive to install, officials say they're worth every penny. "We really do have the data to show that the operating costs are significantly lower," says Maureen Guttman, executive director of the Pennsylvania Governor's Green Government Council. "It's just the mindset of an initial capital investment which then has a long-term payoff."
