A study found that Swedish women in their 40s to 60s who had high cholesterol were just as likely as counterparts with low cholesterol to develop Alzheimer's disease later in life. However, researchers learned that women who had a significant decline in cholesterol levels from middle to old age had more than a twofold higher risk of dementia compared with those who maintained or increased their cholesterol levels.
