Study participants who consumed monounsaturated fat from avocado or sunflower oil increased levels of "good" cholesterol and decreased levels of "bad" cholesterol more than participants who ate carbohydrates instead. Both groups ate a vegetarian diet, but the monounsaturated fats bolstered "the cardioprotective effect of the cholesterol-lowering dietary portfolio without diminishing its cholesterol-lowering effect," said the researchers.
