Memphis, Tenn., school officials have shelved a plan to implement a more lenient grading policy after the district's teachers' union refused to support the plan. The policy would have allowed failing students to make up their work in the next quarter. Teachers said it was a sign to students that they no longer needed to try in school. "Our students do not need yet another crutch to escape reality," the union president said. "What teachers encourage are responsibility, accountability and students' best effort."
