A record number of Americans shopped during Thanksgiving weekend, and their average spending increased to $365, a 6% increase compared with last year, according to a survey by the National Retail Federation. An estimated 212 million people turned out for the launch of the holiday-shopping season, the biggest number since the trade group began its survey in 2004. Spending reached $45 billion, up from last year's $41.2 billion.
