Newly planted trees and shrubs may need supplemental irrigation, but mature plants with well-developed root systems should be able to flourish without it, writes Jeff Wasielewski, an expert in South Florida horticulture. Gardeners should understand the climate of their area to be able to know when to water their plants, because excess irrigation can lead to root rot, soil breakdown and fungal and bacterial diseases.
