Health care premiums for employer-sponsored family insurance plans increased three times faster than median incomes -- an average of 41% nationwide -- from 2003 to 2009, reports the Commonwealth Fund. In its report, the group, which supports this year's health reform measure, says the law can slow the rate of cost increases by allowing states to challenge premium increases that are excessive and to help low- and middle-income families afford health insurance.
