The International Association of Machinists has filed with the National Mediation Board to seek a union election among some 3,200 airport workers and reservations agents at AirTran Airways. The IAM already represents those workers at Southwest Airlines, which has announced plans to acquire AirTran, pending government approval. Last year, an organizing bid by the IAM failed to attract support among 35% of eligible AirTran employees, the threshold required for a union election.
