Mario Draghi, governor of the Bank of Italy, said Italian banks have survived the financial crisis in relatively good shape, but some will need to strengthen their finances to comply with capital and liquidity rules outlined by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision. "Some banks need to work more in order to quickly strengthen their capital base," he said. Draghi presented the central bank's first Financial Stability Report, which encourages the government to reduce its budget deficit to spur economic growth.
