Canine teeth cleaning and other dental procedures should only be performed by licensed veterinarians, and the procedures are safest under general anesthesia, for several reasons, writes veterinarian Michael Watts. Scaling tools used to remove tartar can result in gum injuries if a patient's head moves and scaling beyond the gum line on every tooth, a necessary part of the procedure, is impossible unless patients cooperate, he writes.
