An EU official took aim at U.S. social media giants this week, warning that the companies could face prosecution if they fail to abide by Europe's privacy and data-collection rules. National watchdogs should be given the authority to bring investigations against non-European companies to ensure that consumers receive proper protection, said EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding. "A U.S.-based social network company that has millions of active users in Europe needs to comply with EU rules," Reding said.
