Star Alliance members are studying the feasibility of offering a standardized seat architecture to allow for more cost-effective procurement by multiple airlines. An alliance spokesman says the base seat would be customized by each carrier through fabric, in-flight entertainment and so forth. "The alliance reasons that if it can bring enough carriers together to agree on a specification for an economy-class seat, it would have a lot of clout to get the seats for good unit costs," says a source.
