The 2011 European Congress of Radiology exposed two innovations that are expected to increase efficiency and power of PET hybrid technologies. Spanish scientists designed a silicon chip with a 1-millimeter thick cadmium telluride detector that they say outperforms PET in terms of detection efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio because of its solid state. In New York, a follow-up to a 2009 study done by California researchers demonstrated that Cerenkov luminescence imaging of breast cancer cells radiolabeled with the drug trastuzumab can be used to guide resection of the tumor and visualize the difference between HER2-positive and HER2-negative breast cancer cells.
