A Times and Trends report from SymphonyIRI notes candy sales grew 4.9% in 2010 and salty snack sales were up 2.9%. The report urges retailers to evaluate product assortment, consider merchandising strategies and take other measures to remain competitive.
A Barry Callebaut spokesman said the world's largest chocolate maker is no longer exporting cocoa from the Ivory Coast, though its factories there remain in operation. Laurent Gbagbo, who has refused to step down following a disputed presidential election, threatened Tuesday to put the cocoa sector under state control.
Organic chocolate company Green & Black's said all its chocolate will be Fairtrade certified by year's end. The company, now owned by Kraft, set the goal in January 2010 and is currently the world's largest organic and Fairtrade brand by volume.
Olivier De Schutter, a U.N. expert on food rights, is calling for regulation of agriculture trading to prevent speculative bubbles that inflate food prices. He said such regulation should apply to institutional investors, not commercial traders who hedge harvest acquisitions against price shifts.
