Despite recent claims that top teachers would fare well in overcrowded classrooms, one longtime teacher and author says research contradicts that theory. Joanne Yatvin -- past president of the National Council of Teachers of English -- writes that larger class sizes present a myriad of challenges for educators, such as limited work stations and meeting individual student needs. While teachers could capably handle a class of 25 students, Yatvin questions what the breaking point is -- "maybe at 30 or 35, certainly at 40."
