Delta Air Lines, United Continental Holdings and other major U.S. airlines have responded to rising oil prices by adding fuel surcharges of as much as $420 on round-trip European tickets. Surcharges have exceeded those charged when fuel prices hit record highs in 2008, according to BestFares.com. The five largest U.S. carriers reported combined losses of $951 million in the first quarter.
