Despite the improving economy, Americans have barely budged from their money-saving habits such as brown-bagging at lunchtime and buying generic products, according a Harris poll. That means small businesses need to emphasize value and earn the loyalty of current customers, Maria Valdez Haubrich writes. Also, look for "pockets of spenders," including older consumers who show less willingness to cut back.
