The CDC reported that 32 states and the District of Columbia failed to exceed the national average on an index that measures the number of retailers that typically sell healthy foods. The report also found that advertising for candy, soft drinks and fast-food eateries is allowed in 49% of middle and high schools. "This report underscores the need to make healthier choices easier for kids and more accessible and affordable for parents," said CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden.
