Plastic surgery is now the fourth most popular expenditure of discretionary income in China, vice health minister Ma Xiaowei said, as plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures gain acceptance in Chinese culture. However, regulators have not kept pace, with many hospitals and clinics not meeting existing standards and beauty parlors and other unqualified practitioners offering procedures such as Botox injections and eyelid surgery. New regulations are forthcoming, officials say.
