A CDC study to be published in Diabetes Care of youths age 19 and younger found that those with type 1 or type 2 diabetes spent $9,000 annually on medical expenses, mostly for prescription drugs and outpatient care, compared with $1,468 among those without the condition. Among youths with diabetes, health spending averaged $9,333 for those who took insulin, compared with $5,683 for those who took oral medications, according to the study data.
