Scientific research involving lizards, squid, salamanders and other "lower" animal life forms are key to solving many of the problems affecting humans and animals and provide long-term benefits in medicine, thereby meriting federal funding, writes Diana K. Hews in this opinion piece. Studies on lizards, for example, helped shed light on the links between bacterial infections and fever, adds Hews, who is leading a National Science Foundation-funded project to study aggression in lizards.
