A three-month race across 12 countries in three continents, dubbed as the Great Race 2011, kicked off in New York City on April 14, more than 100 years since the original race. Some of the participating vehicles run on alternative fuels such as propane, methane and ethanol, and there is a hybrid Chevrolet Corvette that can run on six types of fuel. The participants fund their own trips, an organizer said.
